“A successful masterpiece. The world premiere of ‘autosymphonic’ fascinates thousands. A triumph for composer Marios Joannou Elia.”

Car horns and engines are among the noted soloists scheduled to perform a multimodal musical piece. ‘Autosymphonic’ is a handmade, one-of-a-kind vehicle.

The New York Times

Marios Joannou Elia is regarded as one of the most important and influential composers of the younger generation.

One of the world’s more remarkable symphony concerts.

Along with the Orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg and the SWR Vocal Ensemble of Stuttgart eighty automobiles contribute their signature sounds to an original musical score created by a musician – the exceedingly talented composer Marios Joannou Elia – who has taken his imagination on a wild ride.

His proclivity for both monumental and historic performances is well known, but with his latest Project, 32-year-old Marios Joannou Elia, once again, exceeds all limits.

The multi-award-winning Marios Joannou Elia is the ideal composer for this monumental event.

With tickets for all 6 performances completely sold out, the triumphant and albeit expected success of his grandiose opera “Die Jagd” (“The hunt”, commissioned by the State Opera of Stuttgart) for four soloists, 3 actors, juvenile vocal ensemble, speaking choir (not voices), 2 orchestral ensembles, tape, live electronics and six cars! This was the first opera in the world to use cars via their normal operation onstage (horns, engine roar, vibrations of metals) as echogenic sources.

The headlights and brake lights flash to the rhythm of music. A musician sits in each of the six cars and plays his ‘instrument’according to the instructions of the conductor. Depending on the score notation he/she must close/open the door or operate the horn or light signals. This methodology testifies the incredible creative perception of the composer and the ability to produce polytechnic and incompatible projects – combined with architecture, scenography, dramatized literature and collaboration with playwrights, DJs and dancers – which enhances the fascination of both audiences and critics.

Although only 33 years old, Marios Joannou Elia has already managed to build a successful career. Perceived by critics as a one of the most important representatives of the new generation of composers and a magician of sound, Elia incorporates non-conventional instrumentation into his performances alongside multimedia.

Car, engines and technology: this was music to the ears of the techie and inventor (Carl Benz). There is no doubt that he would have been thrilled by the Project, just like the 20,000 attendees of Mannheim. On Saturday the City of Mannheim staged  the world premiere of “autosymphonic” by the renowned European music innovator Marios Joannou Elia, which was specially composed for the 125th birthday of “Benz Patent-Motorwagen” (patented in 1886).

The large orchestral and choral parts either blended congenially with the sound repertoire of cars or conversly competed with them. The dialogue between the classical orchestra and technoids of car sounds worked perfectly.

A truly baroque celebration of great emotions, an eruption of sounds, lights, and picturesque colours. Polymediality as a concept worked with the Event aesthetics without trivial clichés or mere sensationalism.

What a night! What a furious explosion of music and light! What a colossal composition of sounds, images and motion! For over two hours no less than 17 000 people experienced the magic of the moment in the wide circle of Friedrichsplatz square, which had been ‘decorated’ for the world premiere of “autosymphonic” as an almost Mediterranean-like concert arena. Everywhere you turned to or whoever you asked for their impressions of that night – almost everyone adorned their answers with superlatives.

There are moments in the life of Mannheim that burn firmly into memory that the city can be proud of: the highlight of the event was climaxed by the world premiere of the composition by Marios Joannou Elia.

Elia would have done it “with lots of anarchism” and an organized strategy, to write music that will attract the people with an atmospheric fine line between avant-garde and accessibility. Harneit (the conductor) acts excitedly when he speaks about Elia, whom he has known for a long time. He could probably not work his way through the 150 plus pages of the score, with up to 40 systems and the strict time frame without such overflowing enthusiasm. He conducts with the help of a computer screen where a timecode sets the pace. Harneit says: “When I bring everything together and I can succeed in making 300 people make music together, then I’m satisfied.

Mannheimer Morgen

20,000 spectators enthusiastically celebrated the one-hour world premiere of the work

The sequences, often reminiscent of film music, were repeatedly interleaved with rhythmic car door slamming or rims tapping with drum mallets. 120 Mannheim students generated this sound carpet. The composer sought to express the sounds/noises of mobility to articulate their uses in everyday life. These  rhythms of the modern world penetrate into the subconscious of the listener.

120 Mannheimer Schüler arbeiteten an diesem Klangteppich.

Roaring engines, squealing wiper blades and horns, plus a multimedia laser show: At the “autosymphonic” in Mannheim the audience was especially enthused by 80 musicalised cars. The clicking and hissing cars, including many classic cars, appeared on Saturday on a big stage – together with the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, and several choirs.

Gigantic, unique, spectacular – no prior superlative seemed good enough to embellish the premiere of “autosymphonic” which was performed at this major event at Mannheim’s Frederichsplatz Park. But after more than two hours when the last notes of the composition of the Cypriot composer Marios Joannou Elia had died away, it was clear: That the marketing machine was indeed perfectly lubricated (to remain in the motif) despite not promising nothing so much.

Noises are not only solid components of classical music from the 20th Century. It was honked even before Elia, like in Puccini’s one-act opera “Il Tabarro”. This here, however, has a novel dimension: 80 cars, from Trabant and Isetta to Maserati, Porsche or a vigorous truck; they are all disposed circularly around the Mannheim Art Nouveau Square. A machine Orchestra manifested in a dimension never seen before.

Geräusche sind nicht erst im 20. Jahrhundert feste Bestandteile klassischer Musik.

A listening experience of a very special kind. At the end an orchestral crescendo, paired with a climactic engine noise and a water tower, whose contours were traced with colored lasers created an Electrifying Finale!

Sensational! 80 cars took part in making music to create a superb performance that neither Mannheim nor the entire country has ever experienced before.

Benzationell!

The visual content of “Vertumnus” derives from elements of shadow theatre but reorganised and shaped autonomously. Thus a personal, contemporary performance is created, which is based morphologically on the musical composition. The music combines electronic and natural sounds, creating an audio-drama. At the same time the music suggests to the listener audio “theatrical windows” which are a creation of a series of selected, imaginative combinations of sounds. For this reason the listener finds himself in a fantastic, linked expression of sound happenings which border on the experience of a horror film.

The result is not a programmed or explanatory music but a series of dynamic complexes of sound which move and circulate within the space by technical means. The authentic music contains a gesticulatory plasticity, is detailed in its shaping and eclectic in its content.

Marios Joannou Elia writes spectacular music. His pieces are performed at unusual locations, often outside the normal round of concert venues. Yet it is not dusty galleries and cultural backwaters that attract him, but rather places that have a special brilliance: elaborate departure halls and car dealerships, illuminated monuments and market squares. He has no fear of contact with commercial event culture. Indeed, he even goes so far as to seek out and celebrate connecting factors.
