The following four verses are an extract from the 9th chapter (Romiosyni) of “The 9th of July 1821” (1893) by Vasilis Michaelides (1849-1917): a poem in 560 verses in the Cypriot dialect detailing the events leading to the execution of the Greek Cypriot leadership, including Archbishop Kyprianos, by the Ottoman rulers of the time:

(…) but be warned that when the aging poplar is cut down

all around it three hundred new sprouts shoot up.

The ploughshare while ploughing the earth

thinks the earth is wasted,

but it is itself that’s always wasted and itself that’s worn out.

(…) αμμά ξέρε πως ίλαντρον όντας κοπή καβάτζιν

τριγύρου του πετάσσουνται τρακόσια παραπούλια.

Το ‘νιν αντάν να τρώ’ την γην τρώει την γην θαρκέται,

μα πάντα τζιείνον τρώεται τζιαι τζιείνον καταλυέται.

The four verses of Michaelides’ epic poem concern a sharp, powerful contradictive speech by Kyprianos to the Ottoman Mousellim-Aga. This power lies within the symbolism of the established word. It also appropriates AKANTHAI (Thorns) as an augmentation of memory as well as imagination. The composition is not thought of as a requiem for Archbishop Kyprianos, but rather as a double-sided ‘thorns dress’: On the one side, the thorns stand with the tips outward for defense, conversely, the tips are directed as an attack and mortification for the body. Here, ‘biting’ and ‘skewering’ is regarded as an act of symbolic rage and consequence.

Die Komposition nimmt Bezug auf vier Verse des ‘Epos’ “Der 9. Juli 1821” vom zyprischen Dichter und Maler Vasilis Michaelides aus dem Jahre 1893:

(…) aber sei gewarnt, dass wenn die alte Pappel fällt,

rundherum an die dreihundert neue Keime in die Höhe sprießen werden.

Die Pflugschar gemahnt beim Pflügen, die Erde sei verbraucht,

aber sie ist es selbst, die sich immerzu verbraucht, sich abnützt.

Inhaltlich beschreibt das Epos die Vorkommnisse rund um den Freiheitskampf der Festlandsgriechen gegen die Osmanen, der in der Festnahme, Verurteilung und Hinrichtung des zyprischen Erzbischofs Kyprianos und weiteren Geistlichen am 9. Juli 1821 gipfelt. Bei den vier Verse handelt es sich um eine von Kyprianos verkündete kraftvolle Gegenrede zum Ottomanen Mousellim-Aga. Diese Kraft liegt in der Symbolik der Worte begründet, die sich auch die Komposition AKANTHAI (Dornen) als Erweiterung des Gedächtnisses ebenso wie der Phantasie zu eigen macht.

Die Komposition ist nicht als Requiem für Erzbischof Kyprianos gedacht, sondern als eine Art doppelseitiges ‘Dornenkleid’: Auf der einen Seite sind Dornen, die mit den Spitzen nach außen zur Abwehr stehen und auf der anderen Seite sind die Spitzen als Angriff und Kasteiung zum Körper hin gerichtet. Das ‘Zerstechen’ und ‘Aufspießen’ wird als inszenierte Handlung von symbolischer Tragweite gesehen.
